Why Interviews are like Dating

Happy holidays, y'all! I was going to write about Chanukkah gifts today but I'd rather write about something else: the similarities between interviews and dating.

Yesterday I had two interviews. They were both incredibly different in many ways but it reminded me of the days when I was on Jdate.com searching for a nice Jewish husband.

11 Tips for interviewing. Courtesy: Boston.com
When you go on a date you get all dressed to impressed, right? Well, don't you do the same thing for an interview? You dress nicely, make yourself smell better than usual, and you do your hair nicely (maybe some makeup too?) for both a date AND an interview.

When you go on a first date, sometimes it leads to a second date where you relax a bit, show a bit more of yourself to someone. Sometimes that first interview leads to a second where you also relax a bit more and let people get to know you. Still, the amount of first dates and first interviews that amounted to nothing are greater than the ones that resulted in second dates and second interviews.

On a date, there are certain things you try not to talk about: religion, sex, and money. During an interview, there are also topics not open for discussion: family, money, and religion.

See the similarities so far?

Here's another one... the "I" factor. When you're going on dates, we have a tendency to sound a little self-absorbed because, well, you have to! The person across from you needs to get to know YOU. The same goes for an interview. They have this sheet of paper that talks all about YOU and then you sit and talk all about you. The "I" factor is amazing in both scenarios because before you can become part of a 'we' they need to get to know you.

There are a lot of sites out there that tell you what to do in an interview (or a date!) and what not to do but I have some friendly advice for you: be yourself. Just like dating, there's a match for you when it comes to employment. If they don't like you, then you shouldn't want to work there. Be yourself and if they don't like it, f*ck 'em. That works in dating, as well!

Gratitude Challenge - Feeling Icky

Hi Fans! Sorry I've been so elusive lately! I'm battling one hell of a flu virus! Saturday, just before lunching with a friend in Jerusalem, I started feeling queasy. By the time we hit the restaurant, I started feeling dehydrated and then it came on... the nausea. I barely got a chance to speak to my friend due to my frequent trips to the bathroom. Before we hit the car, I was nearly on the floor. I'll spare you the details but it wasn't pretty and I am STILL sick!

Since going back to work, I've been sick at least once a month. It sucks and I'm sure my bosses just looooove it. Well, this time, I'm about 2 weeks shy of my resignation date and I have sooooo much work to do but I'm completely side lined by this whole thing.

So, quickly, I'm going to list a few things I've been grateful for the last few days...
  • My dogs - because they stuck by my side the ENTIRE time I spewed chunks and cuddled with me endlessly.
  • My son - he's so patient and I think he just 'gets it' that Ima's not feeling so hot. He's going easy on me.
  • Our Gannenet (day care lady) - she took Yoavi yesterday when both of us were completely out of commission.
  • Grocery shopping online - it allowed me to buy stuff to make chicken soup ... because it's all I can eat.
  • Chicken soup and rice - because it's all I can eat.
For your enjoyment, here's Yoav not enjoying his food...

Now tell me what you're grateful for...

Totes Retro Review

This is the hardest blog post I've ever had to write but not because it's personal. I received a product I didn't know what to do with and, after wracking my brain, I think I finally figured out how to present you, my loyal readers, with an honest review that doesn't suck.

I was asked to review a hand-drawn tote bag from Totes Retro. I was given three options to choose from and I chose Space Invaders:

I was really excited when it came in the mail because I am a HUGE fan of canvas tote bags - Craig calls them my fun bags because when I travel with them, I always have fun stuff hidden inside. Well, when I received my bag, I was a little disappointed.

The bad: I thought the drawings would be a little sharper and when the bag accidentally made its way into the washing machine, it came out half the size it was when I got it. Yeah, it shrunk.
Close up!

The good: It looks unique and I like that aspect. As a huge fan of the 80s, I like what the bag is all about (c'mon, I'm an nerd!). I like that every bag is unique and I think it's cool that someone took the time to draw on each bag. Also, the price is something that can't be beat: £2.50 ($4/15NIS) - which still makes this a winner in my book.

Since the bag shrunk, I've found it to be really useful when I need to schelp Yoavi's diapers and wipes around - it's just big enough to fit 4 diapers, a box of wipes, a changing mat, one toy, a few pacifiers, and a ready-made bottle. I may add a zipper or a fastener on to the bag but it'll still be perfect when I need to change Yoav on the airplane.

About the Company:Totes Retro creates light bags that come with one of three hand drawn images. You can choose between Tetris, Pac Man, or Space Invaders. To see the rest of what they have, visit their website. You can also interact with them on Twitter and Facebook!

Giveaway: Starting today, you can win your very own Totes Retro bag! From June 29 until 11:59 pm EST on July 15th, you can enter to win all three bags!!

I received this product through Karma Media in exchange for my honest review.

Pregnancy Must Haves

Oh insomnia, how I love thee... no, wait, no I don't. I loathe thee. I cannot figure out why I can't sleep lately. I'm woken up by random things like the baby kicking, pelvic pain, the dog dreaming, and even Craig yelling "why are you coming after me?" (but in a Jersey Shore-style) in his sleep. Some nights I don't even sleep at all. I'm often woken up just because I'm sweating. Pregnancy sounds fun, yeah??

Well, on top of everything that's going on in my brain, I came across a blog post on People.com that got me thinking. Marla Sokoloff wrote an interesting piece on her pregnancy must-haves. As I looked through her list, I kept thinking "does she think we're all independently wealthy people?" Nearly everything she had on her list is expensive. So, I decided to create my own "must have" list for my friends that are currently expecting! Since this is me we're talking about, you can expect my choices to be somewhat inexpensive.

Clothing
Any good mama-to-be should know to be versatile but there are a few things you're going to need!
I could not have survived my pregnancy without the three empire-waist dresses I bought. When I bought them, I got them on a whim and told Craig "I'm going to wear these all the time!!" We were short on cash and I wound up spending about $100 on two bags of clothes (not just the dresses). While he rolled his eyes at me, I've worn every piece of clothing I bought that day at least 100 times by now. The dresses are my go-to tunics now and I still get compliments when I wear them. They are fantastic for before/during/after pregnancy!

Make sure you get maternity jeans with a stretch to it! As you expand, you want jeans to expand with you and you're going to need shirts that cover!! Don't forget about sweaters! You WILL get cold at some point, so invest in a few longer cardigans that can easily be taken off when you get hot, again.

Shoes. All you really need are shoes... that will expand with your feet. I preferred wearing boots all winter but I learned a valuable lesson - don't invest a lot of money in new and expensive shoes. They won't last you long. Your feet may go up a size, so look for bargains on shoes that you won't mind tossing once your feet return to a normal-ish size.

It's always nice to have a fancy dress or two - you never know when someone will be getting married or you have a party to go to. My recommendation: buy 1 floor length dress and 1 shorter dress.

Just like your t-shirts, tunics become great for every day wear, so invest in longer tunics that will eventually get shorter as your belly grows. They go well with just about everything - jeans, leggings, skirts...etc.

There are also other things you need...
I'm not kidding when I say stretch marks itch. Get Shea butter!  Palmer's Shea butter works really well at relieving dry stretched skin but use a bit of aloe to cool the skin off a bit!

Another thing you'll need: a durable water bottle. I prefer metal, some people prefer glass or plastic. Just make sure it's BIG! You need to stay hydrated and it's easier to throw a water bottle in your purse than it is to go to Starbucks.

Books will keep you entertained but you don't need to buy every pregnancy book on the market. My favorites: Taboo Secrets of Pregnancy: A Guide to Life with a Belly and Expect This! - they're not scary pregnancy books and they're actually rather funny.

I love makeup... and my skin changed a lot with pregnancy. Invest in a few staples: cheek/lip stain, tinted moisturizer, SPF, lip balm, and a cream eyeshadow. These are as versatile as it gets and you don't want your makeup sliding off during the day. Take it from someone who lives in the Middle East!!

The last thing you can't and shouldn't live without: healthy snacks! Keep fruit, oatmeal bars, string cheese, and nuts handy! Keep them in your purse, bag, desk...etc. You're going to get hungry at random times - may as well stave off the hunger. Plus, eating little by little helps keep "angry lady" at bay as well as nausea. Trust me when I tell you that at the drop of a hat your blood sugar will drop - so keep food on you at all times - make it a habit!

    Kardashians

    Author: Joyce Mccall

I have gotten so into reality TV shows since we got DirecTV. I can not believe how many shows the Kardashians have. For one family there are three different reality shows! I really couldn't believe it when I figured out that they are basically famous just because they have these reality shows and are filthy rich. My favorite Kardashian show is Chloe and Lamar. The show focuses on their new marriage. To me Chloe seems to be the most down to earth of the three sisters. The last episode I watched was all about how Chloe and Lamar have been trying to get pregnant and it just isn't happening. Everyone is pressuring them and asking why they don't have a baby yet. I have dealt with infertility, so I know how hard that can be. I think it is great that they are sharing that on their show so people can see that their lives aren't perfect. As much as I like these shows I have to wonder how much of it is truly reality and how much is staged and made-up.

Good Days and Bad plus Some Recipes

I started my day panicking for no apparent reason. Seriously. Just kind of started panicking. I have a lot on my mind but I'll save that for another day. When I calmed down, I cracked open the book I've been reading since July. Initially, I bought Lunch in Paris: A Love Story with Recipes when I was in Detroit. I needed something to keep my mind off of what was going on: my grandmother was dying before my eyes. In the end, I opted for books on the Holocaust - it made me feel closer to her. I knew I'd eventually come back to Lunch in Paris but I didn't know when.

I believe that certain things come into our lives when necessary. For me, those things are usually books and recipes. Sometimes songs. When I picked up and continued reading Lunch in Paris the timing felt right; I just finished reading five books on the Holocaust. I thought it was supposed to be a fluffy love story but as I read more, I realize that Elizabeth Bard (the author) is a lot like me. Stuck between two places.

There are days in Israel where I want to curl up and cry. On other days, I want to set the country on fire. On my really good days, I just want to go for a walk and enjoy the scenery. My problem now: my good days are few and far between. I consider it a personal victory when I go through a day without someone chiding me for my lack of understanding the Hebrew language AND without someone saying "you need to be more Israeli." I'm not Israeli. I'm an American who happens to have Israeli citizenship.

I take that back. I am Israeli. I'm not a Sabra.

I wasn't born in this glorious country - which is why 99% of this place pisses me off. But it's still my home and the only home for the Jewish people.

This is the only place where Shabbat dinner is sacred among families.

Last night, we ventured out of our home to go to a friend's house. As usual when dining with friends, everyone bring something. Because I am forever my grandmother's granddaughter, I brought enough to feed a small Syrian army. I made Quinoa Salad; Lebanese Lentil Soup (recipe found here); House Salad with Japanese Steak House-style Dressing; and Pita Chips.

Like I said, small Syrian army. My yet-to-be born child will be lucky if he's not fat by the time he's 10.

Most of the food was REALLY easy to make - some of it was time consuming but all of it was delicious... to me. I think cooking for Shabbat made me a happier person yesterday - so I will count yesterday as a "good" day in Israel. So good that I will leave you with my recipes:

    Quinoa Salad
    Ingredients
    1/4 cup uncooked quinoa
    1 cup water
1 Bag of Lettuce or cut up romaine lettuce
1 Cucumber, deseeded, cut into small pieces
Dried fruit (I used cranberries but raisins or cut up apricots work well)
1 Can of Mandarin Orange Segments (do not drain)
    1 tablespoon Olive Oil
    1 Pinch of Salt

    Prepared
Put a small pot on your stove and let it sit on the heat for a minute - add your quinoa then let that sit for a minute or two. Add your water and cover the pot. Take the pot off the heat and place the pot in your fridge when the quinoa looks like this:

In a large salad bowl, combine your lettuce, cucumber, and dried fruit. Take your can of orange segments and set aside 1/8 cup of the juice - drain the rest of the oranges and add to the salad. Take your orange liquid and add your olive oil to it with the salt. Set it aside. Once your quinoa is cooled, add it to the salad (without the liquid mixture). Toss the salad well.
When you're ready to eat, wish the liquid/oil concoction together and add it to the salad. Give the salad a good toss and serve.

House Salad with Japanese Steak House-style Dressing
    Ingredients
    (Dressing)
2 large carrots, peeled and roughly chopped
5 small shallots (or 1 large one), peeled and roughly chopped
2 tablespoons roughly chopped fresh ginger
    2 tablespoons soy sauce
    3 tablespoons rice vinegar
2 tablespoons toasted sesame seed oil
    3 tablespoons canola oil
    1/4 cup water

    (Salad)
    1 cucumber
1 Bag of Lettuce (with carrots and red cabbage)

    Prepared
    (Dressing)
Boil water in pot on the stove - once the water is boiling, add your carrots and let boil for 3-5 minutes, then drain the water and add the carrots to a food processor. Pulse the carrots until finely chopped. Add the shallots and pulse again until the mixture is finely chopped. Add your ginger, soy sauce, rice vinegar, and oils - then pulse again until the mixture is combined well together. Add your water, mix well and move it to a seal-able container.

    (Salad)
Peel, cut, and chop your cucumbers. Add them to a large salad bowl. Add your lettuce mixture to the bowl. Mix well. When the salad is ready to be served, spoon 2 spoonfuls of dressing over the salad - do not mix. Enjoy.
    Pita Chips
    Ingredients
    5 pitas
    1/8 cup olive oil
1/8 teaspoon salt (or a pinch)
    Za'atar (optional but really yummy)

    Prepared
With a pizza cutter or bread knife, cut each pita into 8 sections. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil or parchment paper. Place the pita sections onto the sheet and brush the top of each piece with olive oil. Sprinkle salt and Za'atar lightly onto each section. Place in the oven at 150 degrees C (300 degrees F) for 40 minutes. After 30 minutes, check to see if the pitas are hard and browned. If not, keep them in the oven for another 10 minutes and check again. Repeat in 10 minute increments as needed.

Do not eat them while they're hot!!!

If you've made it this far - I want to add that I highly recommend the book mentioned above. It's an easy read and you can easily relate to Elizabeth. I promise.
