Gratitude Challenge - Blog Hop

OK, before I dive into the blog hop stuff, I promised you - my dear readers - that I would document everything I am grateful for. I promise, it won't be silly things like "I'm so grateful for coffee" even though, right now, I AM really grateful for coffee. I got up really early, thanks to Yoav (and Sparky dog), but that early time meant I cleaned the floors, brought in laundry from the line (that's right! We don't have a dryer), put some more laundry to go in the washing machine, AND I still had time to make my blessed coffee.

And on to some REAL gratitude...
  • I am grateful that last night, as my husband studied for his exam, I got some quiet time to do some work.
  • I am grateful for the foresight I had to cook a kilo of chicken in advance and freeze it - dinner was a breeze last night.
  • I am grateful to my brother-in-law for posting so many pictures of my niece and nephews - I miss them - and it reminds me that I'll get to see them in just over a month.
  • I'm grateful for my job because I work in a company where the higher-ups still ask for your advice on personal matters like vacation spots to go to and yummy food to eat when dieting (truth!!).
  •  I am grateful to Cecil dog who just wanted to cuddle with me last night.

Taking Care of Mom - Post-Baby

Last week, I wrote a post about baby gifts - what to get and what not to get expectant moms. In truth, I've been really lucky - I LOVE everything that's been given to us but the post made me think about what we need and what I need in a larger capacity. I'm constantly being told by my friends that right now is the time to indulge and be selfish ... to spend a little money on myself. In one day, I was told to get a manicure and pedicure plus a new haircut and hair color ... by four different people. First of all, I like my hair cut and my color. Second, I can do my nails myself. Doing my toes is a bit harder but, c'mon people, it's winter! I have a hard enough time shaving my legs this time of year - don't expect me to get a pedicure!

Anyway, as I eagerly await the arrival of the little monster currently destroying my insides, I'm pinning away on Pinterest. My friend, Sarah, wrote a great post about how loving your kids and loving motherhood are not the same thing. This got me thinking that I really need to find things that are just for me so I don't wind up resenting motherhood or my child. So, I created three new boards on Pinterest: Healthy Foods, Post-Baby Workout, and Post-Maternity Style. I know I'm supposed to be worried about the baby's well being, and I will be, but who is going to worry about my well being. So many of my friends have had children and then stopped taking care of themselves. While I won't call them out publicly on it, I really don't want to go that route. Craig and I agreed a loooooonnnnnng time ago that taking care of me is just as important as taking care of Baby Glaser.

During parts of my pregnancy, I went a little crazy with foods that weren't necessarily healthy for me. While 90% of what I eat is good for me, 10% of it hasn't been and I want to change that... hence my health board. I have no intention of eating fat-free this or reduced-calorie that (you should know me better) but I want to put more fruit and veggies into my belly. This pregnancy was rough... I couldn't eat so many complex carbohydrates like brown rice, multigrain bread, or even wheat bread! It totally messed with my system. I love smoothies but, lately, fruit has been really expensive here. I've started freezing fruit that's about to go off and even started buying things like pineapple and apricot in their canned variety. Thankfully, we have a little blender so making smoothies isn't so rough but those are about to get healthier as well!

Once the baby is out, I'm going back to eating healthier!

I'm also heading back to the gym as soon as I can!! So many of my friends tell me that just getting out for a walk helps clear the mind but the gym is "me" time. It'll be a chance for Craig to bond with the baby and a chance for me to get away from the baby ... and Craig ... and the dogs. Don't worry, I won't go overboard but I want to lose the baby weight, get healthy, and be on a path that could have me looking like this:

Ok, maybe I won't look like that ... but I'd like to look healthy. And be a size 4. Again. One of my bloggy friends said this wasn't a lofty goal since the baby will need fresh air (and I will need to get out of the apartment), daily walks will help me lose the baby weight. I do have a goal - look better by the time my maternity leave is over. "Better" means not double-chinned and bloated.

The last part of taking care of me comes in the form of clothing. I have clothes that can last me a few weeks after the baby is born but once the initial bloat is gone and I'm deflated, I can't really wear some of this stuff ... and I don't want to invest in a new wardrobe just yet. Remember, I want to lose weight so investing in a brand new wardrobe is just dumb ... but I did make a deal with my Dad. When he and Jo-mama visit, they'll babysit so I can go interim-clothes shopping. Here are a few of my basic style ideas:

If you couldn't tell, I like jeans... a lot. The problem: I don't have any!!! These outfits are my cool-Mommy casual-chic outfits that can (and will) be mixed and matched.

So, what do you do to take care of you post-baby? Is there anything special you do for "me" time?

School Books on the Cheap

I know it's been a while and as I explained in one of the groups I participate in - we've been a little busy! Craig is working on one of his Senior Thesis Papers. The topic: The Jews and the Comic Book industry. How COOL is that??? My seminar papers were waaaay more boring than that! For the past two weeks, we scoured the Internet looking for a few "academic resources" only to find the books in partial online versions or on back order.

I learned with my seminar papers that buying the books can be kind of dumb. For me, it was a waste of money but I had to do it because I had no other option. Thankfully, CampusBookRentals.com has a solution for my friends that are still in school. Through their company, you can rent awesome textbooks for a fraction of the cost. The best part: you can highlight in them!! If you decide to keep the book, you can keep it and pay the difference.

Renting the books is as easy as it sounds and when you're done, just return them! It's kind of like a library except you have a longer period for rental. If you return the book within 30 days of renting it, you get a 100% refund but I don't recommend waiting for the pre-paid return envelope. It could take a while to get to you.

One of the other things I love about this company is their participation in Operation Smile. For all textbook rentals, they donate money to this amazing organization. I know a lot of our readers are BIG into buying from socially aware companies - so the fact that they work with Operation Smile gives CampusBookRentals.com my seal of approval. For those of you that don't know what Operation Smile is, they started in 1982 and since then have repaired cleft lip and palates for over 150k young adults and children all over the world. Pretty cool, huh?

Since my nephew is starting college next year and I'll be in Grad School, CampusBookRentals.com will be an amazing alternative for us. Who needs to buy the books when you don't need to? You can also sell them your old books - as long as they weren't the ones you rented from them.

So, all you busy students - with your new semesters starting, why not save a little cash? You can learn more about CampusBookRentals.com from the awesome videos below. Follow them on Facebook and Twitter.

How does it work?

Addictions and Budgets

Ever have an addiction? I don't mean to something like alcohol or drugs. I mean to something like pie, LolCatz, or shoes.

Right now, I have an addiction to two sites: Pinterest.com and Polyvore.com. Pinterest allows me to find cool things on the internet then "pin" them to a "board". It's kind of like those cork boards I had growing up where I would pin pictures and stuff to. Polyvore allows me to create fun outfits and looks, then publish them and post them to Facebook. Oddly enough, some of my polyvore looks have been re-pinned over and over again on Pinterest.

These two sites are giving me maternity inspiration. Not just for clothes, but also for food.

I promised you last week that I'd hit up some budgeting updates this week, so here goes:
Craig and I did a BIG shop that wasn't actually so big. We replaced a pan of mine that got ruined due to someone (like my husband) washing it in oven cleaner. Yeah. You read right. I also did quite a bit of maternity shopping... my next big maternity shop will be in mid-September for all the Jewish holidays and some weddings we have coming up. Downside: we have a few more months of Summer. Upside: I spent around $40 on 4 tank tops and 4 dresses! WHOO HOO!

So, those two weddings we have to go to are religious - which means I need to cover as much as I can. Since it'll still be warm here, this is what I came up with:

Not too shabby, right? Only in my dreams, I suppose.

I'll update more on our budgeting tomorrow, I promise! Join me on Pinterest.com!!
