Home Decoration - From "College" to "Adult"

I know I've been writing a lot today, I guess I'm making up for lost time and since it's Shavuot - I'm trying to get it all off my chest while I can (it's a public holiday - so I'm off work... YAY)!

The hubby and I live in a small apartment. The size is perfect for us for now but once we start having kids, I know we'll need to "upgrade" to something bigger. That got me thinking about the houses I used to live in. To me they were grand with decorative hall tables and interesting designs on the walls. It made me a little nostalgic. When we moved into this apartment, it took us about a year to really decorate. I got our "hall table" from an American woman moving back to the US. We got our decorative shelving unit from her, too. It all came from IKEA... which doesn't scream elegance to me.

I'm not as creative as my Mom with designs and not as masterful as her when it comes to redecoration but WOW does my apartment need a pick me up! We mostly live in our computer room and bedroom... perhaps even the kitchen but our apartment is reminiscent of 1976 - a time before I was born. The IKEA hall table is nice - but the wrong color. So is the shelving unit. Nothing really matches and it makes me feel like it's more "college dorm" than "adult apartment". It also made me realize how far we have yet to go in "growing up".

Le sigh.

Yet, it's amazing how that little dinky hall table really makes the room look "made". Perhaps all it needs is a coat of brown spray paint.

How do you spruce up your home to make it feel more "adult"?
