Water Damage and Dreams of a New Home

I recently came across a review for http://www.thesteamteam.com/ and it got me thinking: we’re moving to Michigan where it rains and snows... a lot! Nearly every home has a basement and near many of the homes we’re looking at lies a lake. Big bodies of water mean flooding. We’re not used to this concept because, well, right now we live on the fourth floor of an apartment building. It’s a rarity when things flood. The last thing to flood our apartment was the washing machine and that only happened because it couldn’t drain properly into the pipe.

Anyway, I grew up as a plumber’s daughter so I understand the factors behind water damage. In fact, when we buy a house, we’re going to invest in water damage insurance. It’s a smart move on our end because when things flood, we’ll have to call in the big guys and that’s not going to be a cheap expenditure.

We’re excited to move and finally be able to live in a house but the idea of water damage scares us. Has anyone ever had an issue with pipes bursting? My grandparents had a pipe burst (or rather explode) in their house a few years back and a similar thing happened to my sister’s house. It happens all too often. We just want to be prepared.

What do you think about water damage insurance? Do you think it’s necessary for a home? We do. If, heaven forbid, something happens, we’re calling the Steam Team.

its a smart move. I remember when my cousin in Milwaukee had their drainage line burst, they paid dearly to get it fixed.

I don't have extra coverage on my house. I think my home warranty has some provisions for it though. Maybe I should check!
